25 Cult Movies You Must See Before You Die

9. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

The Big Lebowski
Focus Features

Will Ferrell's dramatic turn in Stranger Than Fiction earned plenty of comparisons to fellow funny man Jim Carrey's role in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. The usually rubber-faced, somewhat infuriating Carrey toned it down immeasurably to play Joel, the withdrawn and neurotic boyfriend of Kate Winslet's irrepressible, volatile Clementine.

Or is that ex-boyfriend...? The film skips around in time as Joel and Clementine's relationship goes from initial burning desire to tear-fuelled break-up, and the two of them pay a visit to a clinic that offers the chance to remove all memory of your former partner from your brain. Cue director Michel Gondry's signature visual tricks and in-camera effects.

Ultimately, it's a film about how you can't really erase pain or your memories of love ones, nor should you. It's also a film where Jim Carrey comes close to acting Kate Winslet off the screen, without even mentioning the fact that the cast also includes Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, and Mark Ruffalo. The real star, though, is Charlie Kauffman's script.
