25 DVD Easter Eggs You Need To See Before You Die

25. Guillermo Del Toro Apologies For His Hellboy Intro

Guillermo del Toro is an incredibly charming man. With that and his superior filmmaking skills - his attention to detail, his eye for a good shot, his unique worldview - has allowed him to get away with making some frankly bonkers films on a Hollywood budget. After helming the first Blade sequel del Toro got his first chance at doing a blockbuster weirdo passion project with Hellboy, a comic book adaptation about...well, what the title says. Del Toro was a huge fan of the comic, and it shows from the amount of stuff he put both into the film and the DVD release. There are so many extras on Hellboy's home video release, in fact, that the director filmed an introduction to help viewers get their heads around all the supplementary material. Which is fine, although a little dry. Thankfully there's a hidden easter egg where Guillermo apologises for the poor quality of the cue cards he's reading from, and hopes it won't spoil your enjoyment of the DVD. See? So damn charming. How to find it: Navigate left on the main menu until it highlights a previously hidden shape.

24. The Dark Knight Jokerized Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI_rrrhXKx4 One we've featured on WhatCulture before, but a good one. The second in Christopher Nolan's trilogy of Batman films had a pretty rad viral marketing campaign, involving fans tracking down Gotham-themed cakes ordered to bakeries around the US, phone numbers you could call to hear a message from Gary Oldman's Commissioner Gordon, and a slowly unfurling set of trailers and teasers from the highly-anticipated movie. One of those trailers gave fans their first look at Heath Ledger's Joker...both on and off screen. Resurrected for the home video release of The Dark Knight, the so-called "Jokerized" version of the film's first proper trailer is tucked away on the blu-ray waiting for unsuspecting fans to find it. It's pretty fun, but also creepy as hell, in the same way that the scene from the movie of the Clown Prince Of Crime filming a hostage is uniquely unsettling. The Joker's defaced the trailer with scrawled text (pretty ballsy for the marketing department to okay "BORING" over the dialogue scenes), smiles drawn over every good character's faces and bat ears over Bruce Wayne. It's a neat little treat for fans as well as expanding the reach of the Joker's chaotic world into our own...which is pretty scary, actually. What've we done to deserve this? And why would he want to deface a movie trailer, anyway? Let us tell you a story about when we were in Burma, a long time ago, and we were working for the local government... How to find it: On disc 2 of the blu-ray, select the third theatrical trailer and type in the code 5 6 5 3 7.
