25 Incredibly Well-Made Horror Films Directed By Women
4. Jessica Cameron - Truth Or Dare (2013)
On the surface, Truth Or Dare may seem like just another entry into the torture porn sub-genre. But part of the beauty behind the film is that it plays with your expectations and winds up being something completely different. Yes, people are tortured. Yes, there is a hell of a lot of blood spilled. But what sets the film apart from others are the aspects of the human psyche it explores. Truth Or Dare follows the last episode recording by The Truth Or Dare Devils. The group of six friends record dangerous, but fake, truth or dare bets and upload them onto the internet for fans to watch. After the surprising success of their latest video, the Devils come face-to-face with their biggest fan, which ultimately crashes the party with the intent to make the web show have more uprightness and realism - by any means necessary. Just like Danielle Harris, Jessica Cameron is a certified scream queen who decided to try her hand behind the camera. Her first outing as a director is unexpectedly fast-paced and tight. Though the torture is excruciating, its the truths of who these people are as individuals that really turns the stomach. The script, co-written with Jonathan Scott Higgins, focuses on horrifying its audience in a different way, with the truth, not the dare. The film crosses lines that will upset many, not with its gore, but with the confessions that come out over the course of the night.
