25 Greatest Easter Eggs From The Last 20 Years Of Horror
16. Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon

The hugely underrated Behind The Mask flourished as a new brand of ironic horror because it knows about horror movies. It knows them because it exists inside the same world as them. Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface and Ghostface are all real murderers in the reality of BtM.
The premise is stellar: a documentary crew shadow Leslie Vernon, a wannabe serial killer who adopts a local legend as his own and begins plotting his killing spree. The best of the films many, many in-jokes has to be a blink-and-youll-miss-it appearance from one of horrors main villains. A news report within the movie cuts to an opinion piece, with a reporter questioning local residents. Including a mysterious man entering 1428 Elm Street - the address made famous in Nightmare On Elm Street as the home of its heroine, Nancy.
Without his usual attire, Kane Hodder looks like a regular extra, but genre fans will recognise him as the man who played Jason Voorhees three times in the Friday the 13th series. Are the events about to take place inside an unofficial sequel to Freddy Vs. Jason?
