25 Greatest Ever Movie Anti-Heroes

15. Snake Plissken (Escape From...)

In Escape From New York, Snake (Kurt Russell) is an ultimate anti-hero of action cinema, a former war hero turned criminal who is offered a pardon if he can rescue the kidnapped President of the United States (Donald Pleasane) in 24 hours. He's a prime example of a reluctant hero, considering that he's been fitted with an artery-exploding device which will kill him if he doesn't return the POTUS in time, and even when Snake completes the mission, he and the authorities have nothing but mutual disdain for one another. The sequel, Escape From L.A., is pretty much just a rehash of the original, but it does re-affirm Snake's criminal status and how much he loves to screw with The Man. Fun fact: the character also directly inspired one of gaming's greatest anti-heroes, Solid Snake from Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear series. So, let's recap: a criminal who hates the government and is only being forced to carry out a heroic act? Yep, that's an anti-hero alright.
