25 Greatest Films Of The Last 25 Years

24. Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day The funniest movie to come out in my lifetime(I was born in 1993) and one of the finest performances in Bill Murray's career. What makes Groundhog Day rise above the level of ordinary comedies is the brilliant premise behind the narrative. The storyline is very simple. A man gets trapped reliving the same day over and over again. Sounds like that would make a pretty monotonous film right? It's the charm of the screenplay and the always pleasant presence of Bill Murray playing a selfish and conceited character that makes the movie so good. All movies need character development whether they're serious dramas or lighthearted comedies and Groundhog Day has that in spades. Murray goes through a myriad of situations and events that shape his character and the performance he gives makes the movie into something new and exciting for every day he's stuck reliving Groundhog Day.

23. Trainspotting (1996)

Trainspotting One of the greatest dark comedies ever made. Danny Boyle's signature style of kinetic pacing is on full display in Trainspotting but there is another element that makes it work amazingly. All of the characters exude such charm and wit that you can't take your eyes off of the screen. The screenplay is really just flawless from the tiniest situations to the most major points in the plot. Trainspotting deals with a heavy situation like drug addiction but is able to use the chemistry of the characters and Boyle's direction to make something truly hilarious and unique. There are rumours going around that there will be a sequel in 2016 and, as long as the cast returns and Danny Boyle once again directs, that sounds like a fantastic idea since the film leaves the characters in such a state that a sequel can really enrich the material.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
