25 Greatest Films Of The Last 25 Years

16. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

ElijaWood I was going to put the entire trilogy on here but I decided on just the first film since I believe it encapsulates everything that is great about Peter Jackson's trilogy. Fellowship is just as long as the others but for some reason it seems to cohere as a whole much better. The introduction of Middle Earth is startling when the audience is really given a chance to see the depth of the world after Frodo leaves The Shire and heads off with Gandalf. Fellowship doesn't make any missteps with it's narrative structure and each character comes off with a clear purpose and there are no unnecessary scenes even though it is almost three hours long. The Two Towers and Return of the King were both amazing films but Fellowship still remains the best since it is the most well told of the three.

15. Toy Story (1995)

The first film made under the Pixar banner and still one of their absolute best. Toy Story marked a revolution for animated movies in America by giving the public a film that can be enjoyed by both children and adults equally. The storyline is expertly told by giving the audience characters that they can connect with on a personal level and by providing a thrilling adventure. There are no moments where the plot loses focus or begins to drag. The humour of the film is the biggest strong point that Toy Story has to offer by being both incredibly witty and silly in equal measure. Pixar has elevated the animated film medium exponentially and Toy Story is a perfect representation of all of the best things that they have to offer.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
