The Ending: Realising that Gotham cannot lose hope by learning of Harvey Dent's (Aaron Eckhart) misdeeds, Batman (Christian Bale) agrees to take the rap, speeding off into the night as a wanted felon, interspersed with footage of Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) destroying the Bat signal. In the iconic final shot, Batman rides through the streets as Gordon explains to his young son why they need to hunt him: "Because he is the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So well hunt him. Because he can take it. Because hes not our hero, hes a silent guardian, a watchful protector.., a Dark Knight. Why It's Awesome: Though the ending doesn't make total sense from a dramatic perspective (Batman would just return to the Batcave and all would be fine...), it's still a fascinatingly provocative way to end a Batman movie, an alluring tease for what would come in The Dark Knight Rises. Plus, there's Hans Zimmer's incredible score, Wally Pfister's gorgeous cinematography, and Gary Oldman's undeniably epic closing monologue. A fine capper to the greatest comic book movie of all time.
