The Ending: Things finally appear to be looking up for Larry (Michael Stuhlbarg), as his wife apologises for her cruel actions, and it's implied that Larry will finally get tenure as professor of physics. Larry then passes his struggling student Clive (whose father awkwardly bribed him earlier in the movie), and at that moment he receives a call from his doctor, requesting to see him immediately about his chest X-ray, implying that something is deeply wrong. This is all while a tornado arrives in town, with Larry's son Danny staring at it as it barrels towards the school, while a teacher appears unable to open the basement door. "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane then begins playing through Danny's earphones as the film cuts to black. Why It's Awesome: Because it cements the movie's core theme, not a critique of religion per se but simply a realisation that it doesn't have all the answers, and sometimes bad things happen regardless of what you do. To seek true meaning and logic in existence is a road fraught with challenge and possible disappointment.
