#1 - $2.788 billion Avatar is a divisive movie, especially as it's been widely criticised for essentially ripping off the premises of everything from Dances With Wolves to Pocahontas. Regardless of how much truth there is in that, the movie is in many ways deserving of it's spot at the top. For starters, it was the first movie to use 3D properly - even if the plot did stink, the stunning visual and 3D effects managed to take it to an entirely different level that helped to ensure it was a must-see for moviegoers. It's ironic, then, that while it brought back the 3D trend, not one single movie has since managed to deliver the same amazing effects that Avatar did. As incredible as those visuals might have been, however, the issues with the story do somewhat overshadow them. They don't stop Avatar from being a fantastic cinematic experience, but it's hardly a sci-fi classic.
