11. The Lion King
#24 - $987.5 million Even after all these years, The Lion King is still the third highest grossing animated movie of all-time. After earning over $765 million during its initial run, the Disney movie became the second highest grossing film ever, behind only Jurassic Park (which had been released the year before), and its success has spawned TV shows, Broadway musicals, and more. An IMAX re-release in 2002 and then another (this time in 3D) in 2011 that actually helped to push the movie towards that $1 billion mark (a figure it still sits just slightly short of). That takes nothing away from its overall success though, especially as The Lion King landed two Academy Awards for its achievement in music when it was released. Viewed today, the movie stands out as the very best non-CGI animated offering from Disney. Still, it suffered from many of the problems that films meant for children do, meaning adults weren't left quite as wowed as their offspring. It was no doubt a great movie, but lacked the right balance of humour and story to appeal to everyone no matter their age.
