8. Avengers: Age Of Ultron
#5 - $1.356 billion Introducing new heroes and villains to this world, Joss Whedon didn't quite manage to outdo himself with Avengers: Age Of Ultron, but did deliver a satisfying and thoroughly enjoyable follow-up for comic book fans. Based on the success of The Avengers and the Phase 2 movies which followed, there was a lot of talk of Age of Ultron being the movie that would finally dethrone Avatar. While its box office run isn't over just yet (it still hasn't opened in Japan), it's become clear that the sequel might not even surpass its predecessor, putting those expectations to rest. $1.3 billion is not a number to be sniffed at though, and while Avengers 2 made less than expected, it by no means underperformed. It's hard to say for sure why the sequel didn't rocket towards $2 billion, but slightly less enthusiastic reviews and the fact that seeing the Avengers assemble for a second time maybe isn't as special a second time are two very real possibilities. It's certainly not superhero fatigue anyway! Right? Whatever the answer may be, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to be shaken up in a major way as they enter Phase 3. As a result, you have to believe that all of their heroes teaming up to take on Thanos in the two-part Infinity War will break The Avengers' record.
