#16 - $1.045 billion If there's one movie that most definitely doesn't deserve its place on this list, it's Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The franchise kicked off in style with The Curse Of The Black Pearl, but things went rapidly downhill from there as each subsequent release became longer and more complicated. This fourth outing was supposed to serve as a reboot of sorts, with the spotlight was put back on Johnny Depp's Captain Jack, but it failed. It didn't fail from a financial standpoint though - On Stranger Tides somehow ended up becoming 2011's third highest grossing movie with over $1 billion. However, despite the fact that the movie was shorter than its bloated predecessors, the messy plot and endless stream of forgettable action scenes eclipsed that. Disney's attempt to save the franchise from a creative standpoint spectacularly failed, but it seems moviegoers simply didn't care and still flocked to see it the second it was released. It set impressive records for the least time to reach $500, $600, and $700 million worldwide, and while many moviegoers were left hoping that the franchise would die a death after seeing the unoriginal and overblown movie, the fact that it performed so well means that a fifth instalment is on the way, currently set to be released in 2017.
