25 Horror Films You Must Watch Before Halloween

14. The Evil Dead

The quintessential "cabin in the woods" movie, Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead wore its low-budget construction on its sleeve, and the result was a wild, seat-of-your-pants horror flick that made a minor star out of lead Bruce Campbell, who of course plays the groovy protagonist Ash. It's unashamedly cheap-looking, but the fun, frantic tone keeps this from being a problem, and though Evil Dead 2 unarguably topped it, it wouldn't be anywhere without Raimi's audacious first time up to bat. Best Moment: Poor Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) gets raped by a gang of demonically possessed trees, in the movie's most controversial and hilariously grim scene. Sequels: Two sequels followed, the brilliant Evil Dead 2 and criminally underrated Army of Darkness, while last year saw the release of the surprisingly decent Evil Dead remake. Rumours constantly abound about a fourth Evil Dead movie, though in honesty, much like the oft-proposed Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, it's unlikely to ever get off the ground. However, Raimi is currently developing an Evil Dead TV series, which will reportedly bring Campbell back to the role that made his career.
