25 Mind-Blowing Facts About King Kong

3. The Ape Who Doesn't Rape

One similar aspect between the otherwise disparate 70s/noughties Kongs is the empathy that's formed between Kong and his love object. Both the Jessica Lange and Naomi Watts characters come to see him as their protector after episodes where he saves their lives. Ms Watts' Ann ever rides around Skull Island with him like a willing passenger. It's a far cry from the screaming terror that Fay Wray experienced every time Kong came near her, despite his affectionate obsession with her. But then neither the Jackson nor the 70s Kongs are near-rapacious like the original. The scene where Kong playfully peels a little of Ms Wray's clothing back, on the other hand, was censored in many territories and became the inspiration for a curious 1974 BBC TV play, Censored Scenes From King Kong, in which the main character imagines those missing scenes contain ape-human miscegenation.
