25 Mind-Blowing Facts About The Wire

6. Who Were Those Wakes Really For?

Some of the most memorable scenes in The Wire were the wakes for various homicide detectives, during which the police gather in Kavanagh€™s Irish Pub and sing along to The Pogues€™ €˜Body Of An American€™ in memory of their fallen colleague. In total, three wakes are held €“ two of which were tributes to real people with connections to The Wire. The first was for detective Ray Cole, who was played by scriptwriter Robert F. Colesberry, and the second was for detective Raymond Foerester, who was played by Richard DeAngelis. Both actors passed away while the series was on air. The third, of course, occurs during the final episode €“ and involves a €˜false€™ wake for McNulty€™s career (as well as, perhaps, a wake for the concluding show itself).
