Tom Waits, who wrote Way Down In The Hole, was contacted during the first seasons production period in the hope that he would give consent for the songs use as The Wires theme. Waits consented on the condition that he could watch the show first in order to test its suitability. After sending Waits the tapes, the shows production team waited anxiously for a response that never came. Eventually they contacted the singer and nervously asked for his opinion. Waits replied that he was desperate to watch the show, but had no idea how to work his VCR. He was waiting for his wife to come home from a trip so that she could put the tape on for him. Several days later, after her return, he phoned the producers and granted them his full consent.
