25 Mind-Blowing James Bond Facts You Need To Know
16. Jaws' Teeth
The Spy Who Loved Me debuted the most famous henchman in the series, Jaws, (who was called The Horror in the Bond novels). Due to his towering height, metal teeth, and ability to withstand almost any punishment, Jaws is seen as Bond's most formidable foe.
Although the character has sharp metal teeth in the novel, the producer, Albert Broccoli, wanted Jaws teeth to be cog-shaped to avoid the actor portraying him, Richard Kiel, from hurting himself.
The most common question Kiel received from fans was "What are the teeth made of?" According to Kiel, they are "made out of cobalt and chromium steel".
In scenes where Jaws bites on something, he wasn't allowed to wear the chromium prosthetics as it could cause irreparable damage to his teeth and gums. In these scenes, the teeth are made of orange peel or liquorice wrapped in tin foil.
The teeth were so uncomfortable, Kiel could only keep them in his mouth for 30 seconds at a time. He said holding them inside his mouth felt like he was "swallowing the bumper of a car."
Jaws’ teeth can be seen at the Spy Museum in Washington, DC.
