Detroit John Boyega
Annapurna Pictures

Release Date: August 4th

Billed As: The true story of the Algiers Motel Incident during the Detroit riots of 1967, which saw three young black men killed and nine victims brutalised by police.

Hype: After his career took a skyward trajectory with his Star Wars casting, everything John Boyega does now comes with an added gloss of excitement, and this might well be the pick of the bunch.

Boyega stars as a security guard who witnesses the brutal Algiers incident for director Kathryn Bigelow, who has previous making exceptional historical movies. She's unflinching, brilliant and honest in her portrayals and given how important these events still are to modern racial struggles, that's going to be very necessary.

Expect it to be tense and energetic, and definitely expect to be affected by the whole experience for the better.
