12. A Ghost Story

Release Date: July 7th

Billed As: Pete's Dragon director David Lowery's return to indie film-making, reuniting him with the leads of Ain't Them Bodies Saints - Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara - for a modern ghost story riff.

Hype: This is about as far away from a horror story as possible, and it's great to see something this tender and reflective coming out amongst the giant pillars of blockbusters that dominate the season.

Lowery has a great eye for humanist stories on whatever scale, and from the trailer - and the reviews out of Sundance - A Ghost Story looks like a gorgeous, haunting meditation on life, legacy and love played through a quirky, unique story-telling gimmick. And Mara and Affleck are irresistibly watchable, so that's a big bonus.

It might be killed by Spider-Man: Homecoming in box office terms, but definitely catch it another day that week.
