2. Lowry's Fantasy Ending - Brazil (1985)
Terry Gilliam's protest against bureaucracy and depiction of a society where paperwork takes over reason, is quite worthy of the cult status it has received. In the film, Sam Lowrey (Jonathan Pryce) is very grounded and copes with his surroundings by escaping to his rich fantasy life. However his imagination backfires when he becomes an enemy of the state and is unable to discern between his fantasy and the horrors pursuing him. His daring run culminates in escaping the city with his strawberry blonde lover into the beautiful English countryside. But wait. That didn't really happen. His rescue never came. That was all fantasy and he instead fled to the depths of his mind to never face his dooming. Hes still in that chair, having been lobotomized. The song Brazil plays us out as we the viewer are left in a very similar stunned state.
