21. "Soylent Green Is People!" - Soylent Green (1973)
The presence of Soylent Green, the newest food rations of the dystopian future, seems to only run parallel to the central plot of the film. One does think it to be fishy though, and not just because it is claimed to be made from plankton, but it is the title of the film after all. It isnt until the final scene where we learn of Soylent Greens pivotal roll in society and in the police procedural. Because of overpopulation, we learn the government not only approves but supports suicide in the form of a giant death building. Charlton Heston follows his friend into one of these suicide businesses and when he is unable to stop his friend from passing, continues following his friends body, seeing as how hes a detective and was detecting. His friends body, along with the rest of the cadavers, runs along various factory conveyor belts, until its moving into a mysterious processing plant. And to our horror, what is coming out the other end of the factory? Soylent Green. The newest nutritional wafers everyones been eating like Thanksgiving dinner. Ill stick to Soylent Yellow, thank you very much.
