As Kurt Russell's Ego himself confirms in the Guardians Of The Galaxy sequel, he is a Celestial - one of those all-powerful beings who originally wielded the Infinity Stones, and the group Thanos basically wishes he was part of.
He's essentially a god (small g, remember), capable of wielding awesome and terrifying powers, manifesting in any form he chooses and basically terraforming planets using his power source.
He might not be around in the MCU for long, but his impact is absolutely huge (and it was very close to being even bigger), and he's definitely one of the most powerful beings we've ever come across in the series.
