The decision to change the ending to something more action oriented and more in-keeping with the Die Hard spirit wasn't a painless one though.

Hensleigh mentions in the film's commentary that the decision to reshoot the ending cost the studio a lot of money, and given the final sequence involves a helicopter chase, numerous vehicles and extras AND a huge explosion, it's easy to see how that may have been the case.

Whether the decision paid off in the end is up for interpretation, but the final ending definitely seems a lot more Die Hard-y than the original.
