25 Things You Didn't Know About Die Hard With A Vengeance

23. The Original Ending Is... Pretty Wild

Die Hard with a Vengeance has one of the most notorious alternate endings in Hollywood history, and it's kind of amazing.

Instead of being caught at the Canadian border and dying in a helicopter crash - as was the case in the finished, theatrical cut - the film's original ending saw Simon escape with all the gold from the Federal Reserve. McClane takes the blame for the failure, and spends the next few years tracking Simon down, eventually finding him in a bar in Hungary.

This is where things start to get a tad wild. As the two engage in a bit of friendly banter, McClane reveals how he's actually carrying a Chinese rocket-launcher that has had its sites removed, making it impossible to tell which end will fire. He then decides to play a game called "McClane says" - essentially just Russian roulette with a rocket launcher instead of a loaded gun - and asks Simon a question; what could he have brought to the meeting that would save his life?

Gruber, guessing incorrectly, fires the launcher and kills himself. McClane reveals he was wearing a flak jacket and walks away, his revenge now complete.

The ending didn't really sit well with the studio, according to Hensleigh - mainly because they felt it made McClane seem cold and calculating - and so it was relegated to the DVD extras.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
