Traditionally, animated series like The Real Ghostbusters are not considered canon. There is an exception to every rule though, and that came in November 1986, when J. Michael Straczynski penned the unforgettable episode: Citizen Ghost.

Long before Ghostbusters 2, Straczynski came up with the idea to have an episode of show act as a direct follow-up to the 1984 movie. In the episode a local television news crew decide to interview the Ghostbusters, only to find themselves documenting the true events that transpired after the team exploded the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and defeated Gozer once and for all.

Citizen Ghost details how Slimer actually helped save the team after their old uniforms, covered in otherworldly ectoplasm, come to life and try to kill them, thus making him an honorary member of the crew and explaining exactly how the former Sedegewick Hotel-haunter came to find himself living in a New York City firehouse.
