Hints of the film's initially harsher tone remain evident in scenes that were shot but ultimately cut, namely the death of newspaper reporter Peggy Brandt (Amy Yasbeck) at the hands of Dorian.
In the scene, after Peggy has sold Stanley out to Dorian, Dorian throws her into a printing press and a set of blood-stained newspapers then emerge out the other side, reporting that she was killed in a "freak accident."
Ultimately it was agreed that the scene was too dark compared to the rest of the film, though cutting it nevertheless had the unfortunate result of basically erasing Peggy from the story with no explanation.
It's a shame as the remnants of the scene released on home video are really quite creative, and without it, Peggy's disappearance feels like a major hanging narrative thread.
