One of the most painful aspects of the movie is the forced romance between Owen and Claire: yes, it might even be more pathetically contrived than the romantic reconciliation of the Kirbys (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni) at the end of Jurassic Park III. There's practically no effort put into this one: it's pure decades-old stale cheese. There's the "cool" guy and the uptight woman, and from their very first meeting in the movie, their previous romantic history is cheekily brought up. Of course, everyone in the audience knows that by film's end they'll be back together: it's so lazy and utterly pointless that it's amazing Steven Spielberg actually signed off on it. When will studios learn that audiences don't need the guy and girl to hook up? Just look at Mad Max: Fury Road, for Christ's sake!
