3 Positive Things The Heat Represents For Female Comedic Roles

3. The Female Actresses

the heat2 Like Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy has stolen the show once again here in The Heat with her turn as the hard as nails oddball Detective Shannon Mullins. On top of this, her turn in This is 40, The Hangover 3, and Identity Thief, the woman is making a name in the world of comedy film with no intentions of slowing down. While criticisms have unfavorably (and in the case of one Rex Reed incredibly rude) compared her "schtick" to a Chris Farley type, that doesn't mean that she is incapable of acting in different kind of roles. Many people cite her characters in Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who? as a positive, showing that poor writing does not make a poor actress. We need Melissa McCarthy around, because not only is she setting an example of successful comedic actress but she's also an example of a more realistic kind of character. Hollywood is made up of the impossibly beautiful, and McCarthy's acceptance of who she is and how she looks is a respectable decision on her part that forces audiences to look past her curvy posterior and see the actress instead. On the other side of the coin is the always reliable Sandra Bullock who has proven that she is capable of serving her own brand of comedy. While Miss Congeniality is now 13 years old, that hasn't stopped her from continuing making other comedies such as The Proposal and All About Steve. (Yes some of these movies might "suck" in your/everyone's opinion, we're getting to that). Both Bullock and McCarthy are a great blend of familiarity; an established actress from the past two decades and a relatively newcomer who's breaking the comedic mold, together their teamwork as actresses on screen and off shows us that we can trust females to carry movies especially comedies. Bullock is a face that many people, young and old, recognize and mostly acknowledge in a positive way. McCarthy needs to act against what the public perception might have of her, and as it stands, so does Bullock. The internet age has opened a massive collection of venomous negativity and gossip that can destroy any famous (or not so famous) person's credibility by one Tweet. Bullock has just as much to prove to us and herself now than she ever did. We need our actresses to be likable, charming, quirky, and funny. Bullock may keep to her privacy as best as she can but when she needs to be in front of the crowd she aims to please just as McCarthy does. We can't shut down our female actresses, they have so much more to stand for in this male-driven era of film. These two are just a small fraction of amazing female actresses who are more than capable of starring in comedies, the chances are though is that you will find most of them on TV with all the good writers...
