2. The Humour Fits (Even If It Doesn't Always Land)

Whether its Star Wars or Batman V Superman, a lot of modern blockbusters seem are trying incredibly hard to be funnier than you'd expect, and X-Men: Apocalypse is no different despite its doomsday plot, there's more jokes here than any other movie in the franchise.

As with other cases, it's all a bit Marvel - you typically have someone popping up during a serious beat to stop things getting too dour - and, like some of the MCU films, it can be out of place and distracting (and there's some that feel rather forced), but a fair few land; Nightcrawler is always reliable and theres a great bit with Cyclops and tree.

If there's one element of Apocalypse that feels like it promises something exciting for the future of the franchise, it's this; between whatever main-continuity movie's next and New Mutants, future X-casts are going to skew younger, so a bit of levity comes with the territory.
