30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

13. The Wolf Of Wall Street

Birdman Michael Keaton
Paramount Pictures

The Wolf of Wall Street is a perfect storm, in which many of the most talented people in American cinema came together.

It's got Martin Scorsese, perhaps the greatest living film-maker, at the absolute top of his game. It's got a completely electrifying masterpiece of a script from the enormously talented Terrence Winters. It's got an A-list cast, led by Leonardo DiCaprio giving the best performance of his career.

As you'd expect, with all of these talents at the peak of their powers, The Wolf of Wall Street is absolute cinematic dynamite; a titanic, charismatic and euphoric colossus of a movie that's as fiendishly entertaining as it is unexpectedly sobering.

Wolf is not just one of the decade's greatest Best Picture nominees, but it's also the most misunderstood. It's been unfairly criticized over the years for glamourizing the appalling behaviour of its characters; in fact, it's the opposite.

The film shows the excitement of working on Wall Street and behaving appallingly but also emphasizes just how pathetic these dreadful people are.

Unlike other Best Picture-nominated satires (looking at you, Don't Look Up), this intelligently hits its targets without ever feeling heavy-handed, and as a result, Wolf of Wall Street triumphs as one of the best dark comedies in film history.
