30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

12. The Father

Birdman Michael Keaton
Sony Pictures Classics

Florian Zeller's The Father, adapted from his play of the same name, is not just the greatest of the 2021 nominees, but it might just be the best film of 2020 full stop.

It's similar to the aforementioned Sound of Metal, which was also nominated that year: it puts viewers in the shoes of a character suffering a life-changing health crisis.

Essentially, this movie is a cinematic representation of what it is like to have dementia and it ingeniously uses non-linear storytelling, cleverly-crafted editing, constantly changing actors and disorientating direction to represent this terrible illness on-screen.

As it probably goes without saying, this is not a cheerful movie and for most, it'll be too sad to watch again. That being said, it's still an absolutely outstanding work that viewers will feel grateful to have seen.

As a haunting and devastating drama, as one of the most brilliantly cinematic stage adaptations of all time and as a off-the-charts acting showcase for Sir Anthony Hopkins, who delivers the greatest performance of his entire career - and oh boy, is that saying something - The Father is a modern classic and one of the most deserving Best Picture nominees in recent memory.
