30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

9. Get Out

Birdman Michael Keaton
Universal Pictures

Horror films rarely succeed at the Oscars, but Jordan Peele's Get Out did extremely well, getting nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and even managing to win Best Original Screenplay. It couldn't have been more deserved.

Get Out is not a traditional horror film at all - it lacks scares, has a very unique tone and goes in many bizarre directions - but it's a film that does everything you want a horror film to do and it does so perfectly.

It uses a horrifying, nightmarish story-line to burrow beneath the surface and highlight the darker sides of modern society in a genuinely terrifying manner, while providing a story so rich and thought-provoking the film could justly be compared to a great novel. Seriously, you will see new things every single time you watch this movie.

It's a visually stunning, brilliantly acted, genuinely ingenious and completely intoxicating nightmare that disturbs the living daylights out of viewers while also providing a surprising number of big laughs along the way - a lovely reminder of Jordan Peele's comedy roots that also adds to the film's uniqueness.

Eventually, it all leads to one of the most gripping, frightening climaxes this century, which further cements this film as one that'll live rent-free in your head for a long, long time. This one will be remembered as a classic, no doubt about it.
