30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

8. Arrival

Birdman Michael Keaton
Paramount Pictures

Another sci-fi masterwork that was so good even the Academy, who normally shun such films, couldn't ignore it, Arrival is like a gloriously satisfying middle finger to bad films.

A mesmerising combo of both art-house and blockbuster conventions, Arrival uses the alien invasion premise (an idea so often used for dumb blockbusters) to deliver a captivating, jaw-dropping and profound story that isn't really about aliens at all.

It's about language, loss, warfare and life itself, and the whole story is anchored by an amazing performance from Amy Adams (who, for some stupid reason, wasn't nominated for Best Actress).

It's a visually mesmerising marvel that leads to one of the greatest film endings... well, ever, and this will no doubt allow it to endure as a classic of not just the genre, but of modern cinema in general for years to come.
