30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

6. Drive My Car

In the end, the 2022 Best Picture race came down to CODA vs. The Power of the Dog, but in an ideal world the winner wouldn't have been either of those; it'd have been Drive My Car. It was a very good line-up this year, but this modern masterpiece is what really deserved the top prize.

A potent, profound and fantastically brilliant character-driven drama that offers one of the best meditations on grief you'll ever see, Drive My Car boasts a near-perfect screenplay that's superbly brought to life on-screen by Ryusuke Hamaguichi's visually stunning direction and a fabulous cast.

With its captivating writing, vivid characters and fully fleshed-out story world, Drive My Car makes three hours disappear like nothing and it would've been wonderful had it done a Parasite and unexpectedly nabbed the Best Picture trophy.

Still, it wasn't originally expected to even be nominated, so perhaps this is one of those cases where the nomination was the win. Besides, it got a well-earned Best International Feature Film Oscar too.
