30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years
5. Her
"A romance between a man and a computer" is the kind of premise that sounds like an April Fool's joke, but writer-director Spike Jonze took this concept and turned it into a heart-warming, captivating and intensely moving love story.
Now that is Oscar-worthy.
The greatest thing about Her is that, in spite of the loopy premise and heavy focus on AI, it is about as human as movies get and most viewers will, in one way or another, relate to this strangest of stories.
The film is also an absolutely remarkable tonal juggling act which seamlessly blends comedy and pathos and Spike Jonze's visually stunning realisation of the near-future is also incredibly striking.
Factor in the amazing cast (of which the MVP is Scarlett Johansson, who does one of the best voice performances in film history) and you've got what is arguably the best of the 2014 Best Picture nominees. 12 Years a Slave was still a great pick for Best Picture, but Her would've been equally deserving.
