30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

4. Mad Max: Fury Road

Birdman Michael Keaton
Warner Bros.

Mad Max Fury Road is, more or less, the perfect action film.

Of course, it's an adrenaline rush with few equals; a mad, ferociously intense, visually glorious and genuinely euphoric roller coaster ride that features some of the best action scenes you'll ever watch - but the thing that takes this movie to a new level of awesome is just how much else there is to it.

The world-building is ingenious, the performances are terrific and the film is absolutely full of compelling, fleshed-out characters that develop in exciting, affecting ways. It's an action film that does have a genuine soul but pulls this off without ever sacrificing or undermining any of those juicy thrills. Seriously, it's a complete masterpiece.

You'll struggle to find many people that wouldn't argue this was the best (or at least, one of the best) film of 2015 and ideally, it would've won.

Still, action films getting nominated for Best Picture is extremely rare and even though it didn't get the win it deserved, seeing one of the best action films ever made nominated for the most prestigious award in the industry was undeniably wonderful. And besides, the Oscar went to the second-best of the line-up, Spotlight, so this loss wasn't too jarring in the end.
