If Bolivar Trask was the brains behind the operation, then the Sentinels are the brawn, mutant-hunting machines who, in their most evolved form, can manifest mutant powers for maximum destructive capabilities.
The future dystopian scenes in Days of Future Past firmly establish the Sentinels as the biggest threat the X-Men have yet faced, with a number of heroes both beloved and new getting brutally killed off in a number of disturbing and imaginative ways (such as punching Colossus' head and decapitating Iceman).
The holy s*** factor is high with these baddies, and what they lack in personality, they more than compensate for with their sheer array of capabilities, and the ease with which they dismantle the iconic mutants.
