7. If Beale Street Could Talk

Moonlight Barry Jenkins
A24

The Best Picture snafu aside, Moonlight stands as one of the best films of the last couple of years and marked writer/director Barry Jenkins as a talent to keep a very close eye on.

He returns this year with If Beale Street Could Talk, based on the James Baldwin novel of the same name. The plot is a love story set in Harlem during the 1970s, where a woman finds out she's pregnant after her fiancee is wrongly imprisoned for rape, and fights to clear his name.

It's an interesting premise, and one you can imagine someone of Jenkins' ability turning into every bit as powerful, poignant, and important a film as Moonlight was.
