30 Most Memorable Oscar Moments From The Last 30 Years
1. Roger Deakins Wins Best Cinematography After 14 Nominations (2018)
And finally, last year saw one of the most deserving Oscar winners ever scoop an Academy Award on his fourteenth nomination.
Roger Deakins is near-universally agreed to be one of the greatest living cinematographers, having lensed the likes of The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Skyfall and Sicario.
The Academy could ignore him no longer, then, when he made Blade Runner 2049 one of the most visually stunning films ever made, and duly, Deakins finally fended off tough competition - namely Dunkirk's Hoyte van Hoytema - to scoop the gong.
The night may have been a huge triumph for The Shape of Water - which won both Best Picture and Best Director - but for many, the big story of the night was one of Hollywood's most consistently brilliant craftsmen finally getting his due.
