2017's Best Picture gaffe wasn't just the most shocking moment in modern Oscar history: it might be the most jaw-dropping moment in any awards show ever.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway went onstage to present the award, and after a beat of confusion, Dunaway deemed the winner La La Land. As the movie's producers launched into their speeches, however, Oscar crew members could be seen moving around the stage, and word soon began to spread that the incorrect winner had been announced.

Taking control of the situation like only a great producer could, La La Land's Jordan Horowitz then interjected and held the correct winning card up to the camera, confirming that Moonlight had in fact won Best Picture.

The Internet was quick to blame Beatty and Dunaway for the incident, but it was quickly revealed that they were in fact given a duplicate Best Actress envelope by accident. As such, the blame suddenly shifted to the accountants in charge of distributing the envelopes.

After it emerged that the lead accountant had been posting on social media at the time of the incident, he and his partner were dismissed from overseeing future Oscar shows.

On one hand, it ensured the 2017 Oscars went out with a bang, but on the other, it did steal quite a bit of the thunder away from Moonlight's win.
