It's not much of a secret that the casting of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman was highly controversial at the time, given that the actor was better known for his comedy roles in Mr. Mom and Beetlejuice, and his more slender frame didn't fit the bulkier build most fans expected.

Of course, Keaton proved all his critics wrong and remains one of the most intriguing and complex screen depictions of the character to date, but what you might not know is just how much vitriol fans directed towards Warner Bros. for the casting.

The studio ended up receiving a staggering 50,000 complaint letters, which in an age where whining about superhero movie casting required more than just sending a tweet, is especially mind-boggling.

These people actually put pen to paper and mailed a letter - that's how much they cared about an adult male dressing up in a bat costume to play a pretend superhero.
