Nothing says “Happy Birthday Dad!” like cleaning your father’s gun collection, until you realize he keeps his weapons loaded (with the safety off) and you ‘ve just shot your mom dead. That might cast a pall over things. Add some grit to your relationship.

Cut to ten years later and Ed Jr., now a college student, receives an unexpected call from his old man. Except it’s not one of those hey-buddy-I-miss-you-let’s-meet-up type calls, it’s one of those I-need-a-schmuck-to-lock-up-my-condo-cos-I’m-drunk type calls, which must be pretty common because he gets right to it, even taking his friends along for the ride. That Ed Sr. may have an ulterior motive is subtly hinted at in a montage of scenes where he fantasizes about throttling his boy, shooting him, slitting his throat with an axe etc.

The Mutilator isn’t particularly distinguished, but it’s a fun 86 minutes that never feels the need to poke fun at its own shortcomings or reference other, better movies. And check out the tagline: “By pick, by axe, by chainsaw….BYE BYE!”
