9. Daniel Isn't Real

She Dies Tomorrow
Samuel Goldwyn Films

Adam Egypt Mortimer's styishly demented psychological horror sees a troubled college freshman, Luke (Miles Robbins), resurrect his childhood imaginary friend, Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger), to help him cope with the anxieties of life.

Balanced on the razor's edge of black comedy, Daniel Isn't Real is the furthest thing from a familiar schizoid-centric horror flick, taking a frequently daring - and, yes, f***ed up - approach to its subject matter, elevated by terrific performances from Robbins and Schwarzenegger (indeed, son of Arnold).

If that's not enough, it's also gorgeously surreal and makes inventive use of its evident budgetary constraints.

Daniel Isn't Real is out now on Shudder.
