Written and directed by Jay Baruchel, Random Acts of Violence is a slasher movie with a difference, revolving around a comic book writer (Jesse Williams) who finds his gory comic being re-enacted in reality.

A gloriously meta commentary on both creativity and what attracts audiences to the horror genre, the film also dishes up its fair share of wince-inducing gore, while acted with vigour by its central cast, especially Williams and Jordana Brewster.

Some may find issues with its tone - both critiquing horror and serving as a grisly example of it - but Baruchel absolutely proves he's got a future in the genre should he desire.

Random Acts of Violence is out now on Shudder.
