23. La Llorona

She Dies Tomorrow
Shudder

Though frustratingly overshadowed by the release of Hollywood's wretched Conjuring Universe movie The Curse of La Llorona, this more grounded, haunting take on the titular Latin American folklore is a far more satisfying treat.

La Llorona is focused on a former Guatemalan dictator (Julio Diaz) who finds himself haunted, quite literally, by the ghosts of his past, as appears to be linked to the arrival of the new hired help, Alma (MarĂa Mercedes Coroy).

With no jump scares in sight, Jayro Bustamante's film favours more quiet, lingering chills but, thanks to strong performances, manages to tell an uncommonly powerful, even unforgettable ghost story.

La Llorona is out now on Shudder.
