Saloum is an outstanding Senegalese genre-bending horror-thriller-western-actioner that follows a trio of mercenaries who, after extracting a Mexican drug lord and his loot, are forced to take refuge in the Saloum Delta region of Senegal.

There, tensions rise and eventually boil over into something quite unexpected, as befits the film's status as a genre-hopping romp that, eventually, descends into outright horror.

With a keen sense of place, evocative ear for myth and folklore, and director Jean Luc Herbulot's firm handle on both style and tone, Saloum is a film that continually upends and reinvents itself over the course of its maximally taut 84 minutes.
