31 WTF Moments From The Jurassic Park Franchise

26. The Little Girl Gets Attacked...But Lives (The Lost World)

The Lost World opens with a potentially devastating opening scene in which a wealthy family visits the beach off the coast of Isla Sorna, and their daughter, Cathy Bowman (Camilla Belle), explores only to discover a group of young Compsognathus. After trying to feed them, she finds herself being attacked by them en masse, and the scene cuts away just as her parents discover her being bitten. Unfortunately, John Hammond explains later that the girl survived and the parents sued InGen, but if The Lost World really wanted to up the ante from the first film, wouldn't it have made more sense to kill the child off? It's not like the original was averse to moments of unpleasant violence, and given how it was populated by two memorable child characters, to kill a kid in the sequel's opening moments would certainly feel like a way to raise the bar. It's not like Cathy or her family were significant characters anyway: it would have had so much more impact if she was killed off, and made the mobilisation towards the island seem even more urgent and significant.
