In an attempt to cut down on the amount of time "wasted" on thanking people, AMPAS introduced a new feature this year where nominees would write down their gratitude beforehand, and in the event that they win, it would appear on a ticker crawl at the bottom of the screen. It's an interesting idea except one that didn't really work in reality for two reasons: the names ticked by too quickly, and the vast majority of the nominees still thanked everyone on the stage anyway.
28. Black Actors "Cameo" In Oscar Nominees
In one of the night's more clever segments, black actors have been digitally inserted into a number of the year's Oscar-nominated movies: we have Whoopi Goldberg playing a janitor in Joy, Leslie Jones assaults Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant, Tracy Morgan puts on a dress and eats a danish for The Danish Girl (telling Alicia Vikander, "These danishes is good, girl!"), and Chris Rock is stranded on Mars in The Martian, as Jeff Daniels and Kristen Wiig decide that they can't launch a rescue mission for a black man. Even if some of the racial commentary felt on-the-nose or forced, this was one sequence that really worked (especially as they got Daniels and Wiig to record new dialogue for it).
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
