Jane Austen wrote Sense and Sensibility in 1811, long before the existence of the movies. A couple BBC television serials were eventually made out of the novel, but the only major feature film is the 1995 Ang Lee effort starring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson. The latter can't get full credit for the creation of Sense and Sensibility, but Thompson was indeed the one who did the difficult work of turning the novel into a faithful screenplay. Like Stallone with Rocky, Thompson also starred in the movie she penned, and like Stallone (did you ever think Emma Thompson and Sylvester Stallone would be comparable?) her association with the film is remembered today for her acting, and most probably not her writing. Nevertheless, a big deal was made out of her involved writing process (she claimed it took four years to write the script) and she walked home one night with an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Most believe the recent announcements of the 2014 Oscar nominees snubbed Thompson for her work in Saving Mr. Banks, further proving that her reputation for acting and funny hats (above) will probably always eclipse her skill as a screenwriter.
